ASME stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers and this society defines steel specifications. ASME is a non-profit memberships group that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines. It is the leading international developer of codes and standards associated with the art, science, and practice of standards associated with mechanical engineering. ASME works toward their goals of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods. It was created in 1880 by a couple of members in a group that helps with leading industrialists, ASME has grown to include more than 130,000 members in 151 countries. Around 32,000 of the members in the ASME are students. ASME’s members are as diverse as the engineering community itself. In order to help ensure safety, quality, and understanding, ASME specifications are published for manufacturing, testing, properties, and dimensions of steel pipe and components. ASME standards are often updated to ensure the utmost accuracy, which means that it is important to be sure that you are referencing the most recently published set. Don’t confuse one of the ASME SA106 grades with a similar grade such as ASME SA53.
ASME SA106 is a specification for a seamless pressure pipe that is also known as ASTM A106. It comes in a variety of shapes, including round, square and rectangular. The ASME SA106 pipe specification is designed to handle high temperatures and high pressure. This pipe has a hollow midsection, allowing for the transport of a variety of liquid and gas materials. ASME SA106 can be used for both structural and mechanical purposes like a petroleum drills shaft or a bicycle frame. Some examples of places that you could find or use this piping include boilers, oil and gas refineries, power plants, ships, chemical plants and more.
ASME SA 106 comes in grades A, B and C, with a higher grade meaning that the strength is higher as well. ASME SA106 is produced using the seamless method most regularly and can be bent, coiled and flanged. These pipes can be produced either using a cold drawn method or hot finished method, with cold drawn products typically having improved surface finish and better dimension control.
Grade A ASME SA 106 is the lowest strength of the three grades, with the lowest percentage of carbon, normally around .025%. If you are looking for a pipe that still is good quality, light, and cheap, then grade A ASME SA106 is probably the best choice for you. For small projects, this grade is often chosen because it is lighter and more affordable than the other two. Just because it is not as strong as the others does not mean that it is not excellent pipe, it just means that it is not strong enough to withstand the more heavy duty industrial projects.
ASME SA106 grade B is a material for steel pipe that is usually used in power and gas refineries, boilers, power plants, and industrial plants. ASME SA106 grade B deals with steel pipe that is used for high temperature services in transporting gases and fluids. This grade is very popular amongst clients because it offers for a wide range of applications. It is stronger than Grade A but it is not needed for as sturdy of projects used in grade C. It offers that strength to transport many different gases and fluids but it is not as strong as grade C.
ASME SA grade C is used for the stronger projects that are needed to transport fluids and gases in a higher quantity. Grade C has higher mechanical properties so as an engineer, they will use grade C when dealing with projects with higher temperature services. ASME SA grade C has the highest carbon percentage of the three grades which shows why grade C is the strongest. Grade C is used in the tough applications when dealing with transporting gas and oil refineries, power plants, and on ships. When choosing if grade C is right for your use, this grade deals with applications tend to deal with a large project.
